Global Goals Week

This year is set to be the BIGGEST ever Global Goals week, which will strive progress on the Sustainable Development Goals. In 2015 these goals were set and hope to be achieved by 2030.

As well as improving sustainability through improved engagement, Leeds Beckett has commitment in addressing developmental challenges facing the world, by working across academic disciplines.
We work closely with NUS to undertake work with staff members and students, to ultimately address the Global Goals.

Below, I've outlined some of the Global Goals, and how they relate to the university and local community directly; developing our current strategies will help to address the goals further.

Goals:

3. Good Health and Wellbeing: promoting healthy lifestyles, preventive measures and modern, efficient healthcare for everyone.
Vegan Lifestyles are becoming increasingly popular due to their associations with health benefits, as well as being an easily accessible diet across the world. With this growing popularity, Leeds Beckett catering team has introduced many new vegan options across both campuses. You can learn more about these new options here: Vegan Offerings @ LBU.
We'd love to hear your feedback on the new vegan offerings across campus! Contact us on social media or email us.

7. Affordable and Clean Energy: ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
"Renewable energy solutions are becoming cheaper, more reliable and more efficient every day".
One of the universities 2021 objectives is to procure electrical energy from renewable sources.

11. Sustainable Cities and Communities: make cities and human settlements safer, more resilient and sustainable.
A major aspect of this goal is to have affordable and sustainable transport systems. A main project Transport of the North are working towards is to develop current lines and create new links, called the Northern Powerhouse Rail. This development will evolve rail connectivity between major northern cities, offering faster, more frequent and reliable links. This will also create new opportunities for citizens and businesses. Northern Powerhouse Rail

You can help achieve this goal, and others, whilst reducing emissions and creating a sustainable campus, by hiring a bike this semester.

13. Climate Action: take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
In order to achieve this, we need to educate citizens by raising awareness and how their waste can be reduced, and the impacts that will have. Educating our staff with the Green Impact programme will boost education and implementation in the workplace as well as at home.
One of the universities sustainability policies is to "Reduce our carbon emissions in line with our carbon management strategy and international regulations through the effective use of space, utilities, goods and services". We hope that by working towards this, through education, the university will have successfully reduced emissions and made a strong impact on the local community.
