Global Goals Week

Image
This year is set to be the BIGGEST ever Global Goals week, which will strive progress on the Sustainable Development Goals. In 2015 these goals were set and hope to be achieved by 2030. As well as improving sustainability through improved engagement, Leeds Beckett has commitment in addressing developmental challenges facing the world, by working across academic disciplines. We work closely with NUS to undertake work with staff members and students, to ultimately address the Global Goals. Below, I've outlined some of the Global Goals, and how they relate to the university and local community directly; developing our current strategies will help to address the goals further. Goals: 3. Good Health and Wellbeing : promoting healthy lifestyles, preventive measures and modern, efficient healthcare for everyone. Vegan Lifestyles are becoming increasingly popular due to their associations with health benefits, as well as being an easily accessible diet across the world. With th...

Shuttle bus: VC Peter Slee sings its praises

Image
Professor Peter Slee, Leeds Beckett's Vice-Chancellor. Our Vice-Chancellor is a regular user of the staff shuttle bus. Having seen him a couple of times onboard we have asked him to write about his experience using it. Here is what he says.  "Our inter-campus shuttle bus is one of those marvelous developments that makes you wonder how we ever did without it. I guess I exhibit a number of the characteristics the service was designed to support. I don’t have a car park pass (I commute by train). I’m based in City Campus but have regular meetings in Headingley Campus. I’m generally time-poor and can’t always find the space in my diary to plan in a walk (although I generally enjoy it when I can) I worry, like we all do, about traffic congestion and traffic pollution in our city. And having lived in Yorkshire for a while now, I’m always looking for ways to make our departmental budget go further. The new service delivers on all of these counts. It runs in both directio...

Clean Air Day at Leeds Beckett University.

Image
21st June was National Clean Air Day. The growing event is a special day when people make a pledge to improve the air quality. Across the UK, many positive actions were taken to encourage taking steps towards making air cleaner. In Edinburgh , two busy streets in the city centre were shut for the day while in Manchester , the city council organised a number of activities during the day including free lung-health checks as well as offering commuters free travel on the metrolink during off-peak times.  Over here at our university, we asked our staff to take the pledge. Several people put themselves forward to show to the world their engagement in making our air better.  Chris Naylor, Electrical Engineer from Estates has cycled for the first time since he had a serious injury three years ago. Louise Hartley, Campus Services Manager in CARES.  Researcher at the Leeds Sustainability Institute. James Woodall, Head of subject in the school of Health...

Staff business travel by bike

Image
Shout-out to all staff: spring is here and you can still borrow our bikes to commute between campuses. Our aim is to, of course, reduce single-car occupancy travel. Having the shuttle bus has helped a lot in tackling this issue but now things are getting greener. Option 1 - Pool bikes Pool bikes is one option if you need to commute from City Campus to Headingley Campus and vice versa. They're Brompton Folder foldable bikes - one in City Campus and one in Headingley Campus at both Student Hubs. To book Option 2 - Electric bike Another option for you is to borrow the Electric bike. We have had great feedback from it since we introduced it last August. Simply book it   and collect the keys with the Sustainability Team based in Queen Square House down in City Campus. The electric battery makes life so much easier. Read Russell's (a regular user) article about how he loves using the electric bike.

Leeds Beckett Commuter stories (part 2)

Juhl Jessen Testimony from Juhl (current student) who is currently hiring a bicycle: "Perfect, thanks! And can I just say how amazing this bike rent has been! Thank you so much, it's a daily joy ! " Andrew Fowler Bio Andrew Fowler Incomes/Online Store Administrator Financial Services LBU Service: 18 Yrs Plant based: 6 months Commuter: 2 weeks Age: Middle  Somebody mentioned the words ‘midlife crisis’ to me recently when I was telling them about a number of changes to my lifestyle that I had made. My most recent change has been to opt for a pollution free mode of transport for my daily commute to work.  Once I’d got the essentials; my bike from the dark corner of the garage and a pair of well-padded shorts (a must-have in my opinion) and practised for a couple of hours in not falling off, I was off tearing downhill and crawling back up them. I cycle a 6.5 mile route which takes about half an hour. It's  not...

Car-sharing is on the up!

Student Shuttle bus survey results

Number of students using the shuttle bus The chart below shows the proportion of students using each of the two shuttle services. A much larger proportion of students are using the Kirkstall Brewery service.  If students aren’t using the service then they either prefer to use another mode of transport or the service does not suit their needs. When asked how often they use the service, most respondents (77 students at Kirkstall Brewery and 16 students at Sugarwell Court) use the service 2-3 times per week.  The majority of respondents (155 students) walk to University if they don’t use the shuttle bus. 76% of students found travelling to the University campus easy. This is positive feedback for the shuttle service. When students were asked has the shuttle bus service made their halls of residence more attractive, overall 83% of students indicated that they did.  In the follow up question did the students think t...

Travel Options Week

Image
Travel Options Week was a real success and staff and students from different areas of the university came along. Several actors of the transport sector had stalls to talk about and promote their travel services. We hope that you have enjoyed it and that it has inspired you to think about your commute and about how you can make it more efficient. We had a plethora of organisations involved in promoting sustainable transport attend our travel options week events on the 19 th and 22 nd March. Some of the highlights included students competing to be the fastest on the Leeds City Council’s Roller Bikes, staff pledging to fit more walking in to their day with Living Streets and staff eyeing up the latest bikes they can purchase through the University’s cycle to work scheme. If you want to find out any more about the offers from any of the organisations that attended the event, then get in touch at transport@leedsbeckett.ac.uk or visit our web pages at www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/transpo...
